The firm: Oblon, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States.

The challenge: The firm had achieved tremendous success serving large foreign companies like Toyota and Toshiba. However, as the marketplace for legal services evolved, the firm felt that it needed to broaden its client base in order to continue growing. Among its new targets: high-growth, cutting-edge technology companies in the United States. In order to connect with this new market, the firm needed to project the image of a dynamic, forward-thinking firm that excels in providing a full range of intellectual property services.

The website’s homepage features a striking, full-screen “silent videographic.” This technique is a cutting-edge alternative to traditional still photography. The videographic features a series of action-packed shots that illustrate the breadth of technologies that the firm regularly handles. Great Jakes partnered with Salted Media to develop the videographic.

The website achieves maximum visual impact by automatically expanding to fill the screen of extra-wide monitors (up to 1920 pixels wide). This is unlike most websites, which use a lowest-common-denominator approach (1024 or 1200 pixels wide). Given that most of today’s high-end laptops support a width of 1920 pixels, a wider format was deemed necessary to appeal to the firm’s tech-savvy target market.

The website prominently features a series of “client spotlights.” These depict how the firm builds close, collaborative relationships with its clients and offers a full spectrum of legal services: from patent prosecution to litigation and advisory services.

The website features Attorney Microsites—a unique approach to lawyer bios that Great Jakes pioneered. Attorney microsites are, essentially, small websites for each attorney that fit within the firm’s larger website. Attorney microsites can be customized to the specific business development needs of each attorney and contain any number of pages or type of content. For a great example of how the firm is using the attorney microsite functionality, take a look at Philippe Signore. Our microsite technology was also deployed for Services and Industries. For great examples, visit the Chemicals industry group and the PTAB Proceedings service area.

The website utilizes “responsive design,” the new standard for mobile websites. With responsive design, the layout of each page of the website automatically adapts to fit any screen size. This means a smooth user-experience, whether someone's using a smartphone, tablet—or even a large desktop monitor.

A set of icons was custom-designed for the Oblon website. Each industry that the firm serves has been given a distinct icon.

The website bios and main “Our People” webpage feature large, engaging photos of the firm’s attorneys. Each person was shot differently, using the pose that best suits their personality. Portrait photography was shot by Kori Stanton.
